| Our Church History In 1953, God inspired the creation of Greater Exodus M.B. Church. Greater Exodus began, under the leadership of Rev. Frank Beasley, with 5 deacons and their wives. The first address of Greater Exodus was 1251 South Pulaski Road, Chicago, IL. The church soon moved to 1404 South Pulaski Road, Chicago, IL. The motto of the church was " Leading a sin -sick world on a journey to the cross." In 1958, Rev. Beasley retired due to age and continued illness. Shortly thereafter, Rev. John Whitehead, Senior, a seasoned man and youthful dynamic preacher began his pastorial ministry. Under the leadership of Rev. John Whitehead, Sr. and the direction from God, Greater Exodus grew rapidly in faith, love and dedication. He brought strong devotion, hard work, intense dedication and the desire that all would feel the warmth of the Holy Spirit. He believed in teaching the unadulterated truth about God's word... the bible. He forged our strong preference for active participation in bible class and Sunday school. During the years of Rev. John Whitehead, Sr's. pastorial ministry, many ministries and members were added to the church. Pastor John Whitehead, Sr. was inspired by God to move Greater Exodus to it's current location of 2900 West Adams to accommodate the increasing membership, given by God. "For God will add to the His church as He see fit". In 1978, our church building was devastated by fire. However, it was our belief in God and the perseverance and encouragement of Rev. John Whitehead, Sr. that held us together. In 1979, we held our first post fire service. During that service, Rev. John Whitehead, Sr., inspired by God, changed our name to The New Greater Exodus M. B. Church. After 31 years of leading God's people, Rev. John Whitehead, Sr. retired as pastor, due to age and illness. In 1988, Rev. Edward L. Whitehead, an energetic teacher, singer and preacher was unanimously elected as pastor. Under his leadership, the theme is "All in the His hands." During his ministry as pastor, he continues the legacy of the late Rev. Beasley and the late Rev. John Whitehead, Sr. by promoting diligent bible study, strong devotion, and preaching the unadulterated word of God. Yet, he has sparked a spirit of "be ye also ready" when it comes to working for the Lord. Rev. Edward L. Whitehead displays "now faith" to led God's people. He is a man the is " tied up, tangled up, and wrapped up in God". Under the leadership of Rev. Edward L. Whitehead, we are striving for another level of closeness to our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. We know that " we can do all thing through Jesus Christ that strengthens us", and "No weapon formed against us shall prosper." We are led by faith and not by sight. The God, we serve, can do the impossible, and give us the incredible. We are reaching for the SON! |
